Difference between epass 2003 and ePass PKI token / PKI card

Posted in

Hi,
what are the differences between Epass 2003 and ePass PKI token / PKI card? The Epass 2003 ist much cheaper. Is there a lack of hardware-features in comparison with the PKI card?

Thank you

Tobias

Re: Difference between epass 2003 and ePass PKI token / PKI card

Dear Tobias,

Thanks for asking this question. Several clients phone us and ask.
Maybe it is better to explain in more details by writting:

ePass PKI

Product page: http://www.gooze.eu/feitian-r-301-sim-reader

The ePass PKI includes a CCID reader, a Feitian PKI SIM card and casing.
But the SIM card was not extractable.

Now, the ePass PKI has been replaced by:
* the R-301 SIM reader,
* a PKI SIM card.

This is exactly the same product and hardware, except that the SIM card can be inserted and extracted.

The chip is a dedicated Feitian chip.
The OpenSC drivers is mature and called "entersafe".

This product is available in the EU from GOOZE.

ePass 2003

Product page: http://www.gooze.eu/epass-2003

The ePass 2003 is a brand new product, based on an ST Microelectronics chip.
As always, the token offers full CCID compliance and was certified by Ludovic Rousseau (one the main pcscd developers and libccid authors).

To conquer new markets in Europe and US, Feitian chose to include a European chip.
The ST chip is certified Common Criteria EAL 5+ and the ePass2003 is undergoing FIPS 140-2 certification (pending).

With hardware development in France (chip) and OpenSC software development (Europe), this makes the ePass 2003 the first European product of Feitian. Which in security is important.

The ePass2003 is available worldwide from GOOZE for authorized countries (a list of countries not banned). But remember there are trade restrictions in the EU. If you buy tokens from us, you cannot sell them (as selling crypto hardware is restricted). But buying from us is legal and you don't have to worry.

The overall product weights only 6 gramms and is probably the most modern token available to date. You may wonder "14,90€" is cheap. The reason is that the ePass2003 includes mainly ONE chip. The integration explains the low cost, but it also means high quality.

On the OpenSC side, the new driver is called "ePass2003". It is available from GIT. The tokens offers 2 profiles: pkcs15+onepin and pkcs15 (with several PINs and SO PIN). Unfortunately, there is still a bug in the OpenSC code for pkcs15. But pkcs15+onepin works great.

Several engeneers are dedicated on the ePass2003 software development. Feitian R&D team has a commitment to offer the best solution.

Now what to buy

Now, from a user point of view:

* Memory size and features are comparable.
But the ePass2003 processor is much faster.

* Feitian R-301: mature, opensc drivers and installer, Feitian CSP drivers
Choose this solution if you are not able to compile yourself.

* Feitian ePass 2003: blending edge, cheap and modern.
Has Feitian CSP drivers and OpenSC GIT code.
Choose this if you need only Windows CSP or know how to compile under GNU/Linux Mac OS.
But GOOZE will soon release Windows/Mac OpenSC installers (working on that presently).

In the future, the ePass2003 will probably superceed other tokens and is a choice for the future.
Knowing you for a quite a long time Tobias, I would recommend the ePass2003 in your case.

Does it answer your question?

Thank you for the information. This was very helpfull.

Re: Difference between epass 2003 and ePass PKI token / PKI card

Thanks for the explanation

Some questions left:

1. What driver(s) do I use from the CD for the R301 + PKI card ?
ePass-PKI or the pki-smartcard drivers or both ?

2. Can I use both the ePass2003 and the R-301 hardware/drivers on one PC or would that interfere with each other.

Many thanks in advance,

Wessel

Re: Difference between epass 2003 and ePass PKI token / PKI card

1. What driver(s) do I use from the CD for the R301 + PKI card ?
ePass-PKI or the pki-smartcard drivers or both ?

=> Please read our Quickstarter guide, which explains everything in details:
http://www.gooze.eu/howto/smartcard-quickstarter-guide

The drivers needed are:
* ePass PKI => entersafe
* Feitian PKI smartcard/SIM => entersafe
* ePass2003 => epass2003

2. Can I use both the ePass2003 and the R-301 hardware/drivers on one PC or would that interfere with each other.

No, this should not interfere. The ePass2003 driver is a GIT branch from OpenSC. It offers all drivers from OpenSC, including entersafe and ePass2003 drivers. So you use GIT branch for a complete solution.
